When you first hear about the Norway rat, you tend to assume it's some rather exotic sort of rodent that can only be encountered in cold weathers, and probably wears a Viking hat. Well, what if I told you that the Norway rat may be closer than you think? In fact, a little too close for comfort.

The Norway rat, also known as the brown rat or the sewer rat is one of the most common types of rodents you will encounter across the United States (as well as in much of the rest of the world). In fact, the image you think of when you think of a rat is very likely to be of a Norway rat. So let's talk a bit about what they look like and how you might go about recognizing them.

Characteristics of the Norway rat
The Norway rat is one of the largest rats out there, which makes things even worse for homeowners worried about an invasion. As the name suggests, the brown rat is indeed brown in color (though it can also be gray sometimes), with the underbelly usually lighter, in varying shades of beige and light brown. Its fur is generally coarse.

What does the Norway rat weigh? How big of a rodent is it?
Brown rats are fairly big, chunky fellows. The Norway rat's head and body usually measure anything from 6 to 11 inches (or 15 to 28 cm, in metric), which is a pretty scary size for an unknown and fast rodent, especially when it's scuttling towards you. And that's not counting the tail! The Norway rat's tail measures a further 4 to 9 inches (or 10 to 24 cm), which makes it slightly smaller than the body itself. But considering that together, they measure around 20 inches (or a whopping half a meter), the brown rat is nothing to sneeze at.

The Norway rat is also quite heavy, with the average adult rat weighing anything from 5 to 17 ounces (or 150 to 500 grams - that's half a kilo!), and in some exceptional cases, even going as high as 35 ounces (a whopping 1,000 grams!). 

Being as it is quite long and heavy, it's no wonder why most people are so afraid of the Norway rat, nor is it difficult to see how it has survived for so long. Fun fact, did you know that the Norway rat is at present the most widespread type of rat both in the United States and in most parts of Europe?

What does it eat?
Like many rats, the Norway rat is an omnivore, eating anything and everything it finds along its path. While some studies claim that Norway rats are particular to cereal and grain, that won't stop this brown rodent from consuming bits of meat, fruit, and even smaller creatures. This wide range in taste may also account for the fact that wherever humans live, brown rats also live. 

How do we differentiate the Norway rat from the black rat?
The black rat is another very common type of rodent, often found around farms as well as various urban areas. Because of their names, most people think it's just a matter of color, but since the brown (or Norway) rat can easily be gray, and the black rat can easily be brown, that doesn't really work.

A much better way to tell the difference between the two is to look at their size. The Norway rat will usually be much larger than the black rat, if not in body length per se, then definitely in weight.
